When we were young children in school, it was always a great honor to be chosen as the “line leader.” It was an easy gig since the management skills required were pretty limited and the “boss” (aka the teacher) walked you through every step of this important leadership role.
However, as people advance through their career paths, they will eventually find themselves in a manager’s position, but the boss will not be there to walk them through the steps of management. Not everyone is born with the natural talent of being a leader, and to be a good manager you have to know what it takes a be good leader. An article on the Caliper website—“10 Quick Tips to Becoming a Better Manager”—gives 10 tips on how to be a better manager to your employees. My favorite three are these:
- Actively work on improving your communication skills.
- Learn what motivates each of your employees.
- Improve yourself.
I feel these tips are the basic foundation for how to be an effective manager and a great leader overall.
